IAESTE Member Ski Weekend

This year's Member Ski Weekend will take place in Grindelwald with the Eiger North Face looking down on us....

 It's intended as an event for the members of the LC's Basel, Lausanne and Zurich and old friends of IAESTE in Switzerland.

Program

Saturday, February 7

  • Arrival in Grindelwald around 10am
  • Depositing of the luggage at the hostel Downtown Lodge
  • Collect Sleds
  • Take the cable car to First
  • Start a 3h snow hike to Faulhorn at midday
  • Chill out and enjoy the amazing scenery at Faulhorn
  • At around 3pm, we take a sledge and race down to Grindelwald
  • Have Raclette at the hostel
  • Explore the night life of Grindelwald

Sunday, February 8

  • Breakfast between 7:30 and 08:00
  • Skiing until 4pm
  • Take luggage and check out between 5pm and 6pm


Participation fees for LC Members

  • With SBB General Abonnement (GA): 60 CHF
  • With SBB half-fare (1/2) and Gleis 7: 60 CHF
  • With SBB half-fare (1/2) but no Gleis 7: 60 CHF
  • Without SBB half-fare (1/2): 75 CHF

For this weekend we ask everyone to buy a snow and rail pass for the Berner Oberland (Region Jungfrau, First–Kleine Scheidegg–Männlichen ).

Snow and rail is an offer from SBB, where you can buy your train ticket (return) and ski pass at a discount price.

  • If you have a halbtax you can save up to SFr. 40.- over the weekend (Cost of snow and rail is SFr. 96.40 from Zurich) Seperately, Return zurich Grindelwald = SFr. 76.-, Ski pass = SFr. 60.-
  • If you have a GA you can still buy your ski pass at the SBB station and get a discount.
  • If you have no discount, just buy your sk pass on the Sunday morning.

You should do as follows:

  • Go to the counter in the SBB station and ask for a snow and Rail pass to Grindelwald for skiing in the region First, Kleine Scheidegg, Männlichen.
  • You will receive 2 tickets. One is your train ticket which you show the ticket checker on the train, the second is a voucher for your ski pass which you will exchange on Sunday morning.
  • You only need a Snow and Rail for one day of skiing (Sunday). Train to Grindelwald on Saturday, ski pass for SUNDAY and train back on Sunday.
  • The cable car trip on Saturday is included in the participant fee for the weekend. 

If you do not yet have a SBB half-fare card, we recommend you buying one! Check the SBB website!

A surcharge of 20 CHF will apply for participants who are not members of one of the local committes of IAESTE Switzerland. 

The money will be collected at the start of the weekend . Only cash is accepted! :-)

Included in the participation fee

  • Accommodation Saturday night
  • Dinner Saturday
  • Breakfast Sunday
  • Sledge rental and associated transportation costs i.e. cable car to First

NOT Included in the participation fee

  • Lunch on Saturday (bring something from home or buy locally)
  • Lunch on Sunday (there are restaurants on the pistes)
  • Rental of skis/snowboard etc (rental is available at First Cable car station in Grindelwald)
  • Your train ticket from your home town to Grindelwald and back and Ski pass on sunday, which you should get as part of the snow and rail offer at your local SBB Station

Cancellation Policy

If you cancel your registration
  • less than 12 hours before the start of the event (that is, 08:00 AM, Saturday 7th February 2009), you pay the entire participation fee
  • 12-24 hours before the start of the event, you pay 75% of the participation fee
  • 24-48 hours before the start of the event, you pay 50% of the participation fee
  • 48-72 hours before the start of the event, you pay 25% of the participation fee

Checklist - Remember to Bring

  • Cash for paying the participation fee
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Skis / Snowboard (rental is available at First Cable car station in Grindelwald)
  • warm clothes
  • skiing / snowboard pants, skiing gloves
  • hiking boots or equivalent for the hike on Saturday
  • sun screen, sunglasses, winter hat, thick socks, lip protection
  • Sun and fun

Meeting point and train connections

  • Meeting point for participants traveling from Zurich: Zurich main station, meeting point (under the big clock), at 0715 (or directly on the train in the reserved area.)
  • If travelling directly to Grindelwald, meeting time and point is at Grindelwald station at 10.10
  • Everyone travelling using the train connections below will be on the same train leaving Bern. This train will come from Basel, with the trains from Zürich and Lausanne connecting with it. Look out for the reserved areas!

Please have your snow and rail tickets bought before meeting. Snow and Rail is not available once you leave Zürich/Basel/Lausanne

Registration

The maximum number of participants allowed for this event is 31 (including organizers and helpers) and the registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. If your registration is not among the first 31, it will be put on the waiting list.
