Excavating the Alptransit tunnel

The Alptransit tunnel across the Gotthard massif will soon become the world's longest railway tunnel, covering the 57 km distance between Bodio (canton Ticino) and Erstfeld (canton Uri).

The tunnel is being excavated from five different locations. We have booked a guided visit to the Alptransit construction site in Sedrun that will take us right into the tunnel. Since the tunnel lies 800 m below the town of Sedrun, we will ride the world's highest elevator, built completely inside the mountain, to get there. The guided visit includes a presentation of the Alptransit project (in German).

Booking this visit is extremely difficult, since there is large demand and very few possible appointments. Our visit has been booked 21 months in advance! So, unless you would like to wait very long for a second chance, you better do not miss this one!

Join us for a one-day LC Zurich excursion to the heart of the Alps!

Cancellation Policy

Since booking the visit was so difficult, we should really have all 15 places taken! Therefore, cancellations are particularly unwelcome. If you cancel your registration after October 28, 09:00, and no replacement for you can be found, you will have to pay the entire participation fee.

Important Notes

For security reasons, the visit to the tunnel is strictly limited to 15 people.  We are therefore forced, in a first phase, to restrict the registration to this event to members of LC Zurich only. Should places still be available, we will extend the event to members of LC Lausanne and LC Basel.

According to the conditions for participating to the guided visit, if you suffer from claustrophobia or fear of heights you might be denied access to the tunnel.

Insurance is up to the participants, since Alptransit AG does not offer any.

Checklist - Remember to Bring

  • Cash for paying the participation fee
  • Winter clothing and shoes
  • Something to eat on the way back
