Conditions FOM

The request must fulfil the criteria fixed by the Federal Office for Migration (FOM):

  • IAESTE must submit the request at least 6 weeks before the internship starts

  • The internship has to be a compulsory part of the studies, which must be confirmed by an official certificate of the university

  • The duration of the internship must not exceed 12 months

  • An approval for a study permit at a Swiss university cannot be changed in a work permit. Exception: If the student has to do a compulsory practical training within the framework of his or her studies at a Swiss university, an approval can be obtained. In this case, the request will not be submitted by IAESTE. However, it can be handed in directly to the authorities.

  •  A person who has entered Switzerland as a tourist cannot acquire a work permit.

  • The trainee must collect the visa at a Swiss embassy in  the country of residence (or in some cases in a European country). After registering with the local authorities in Switzerland the trainee will receive the residence and work permit “L”.
